POINTS TO REMEMBER ON THE EVANGELISM & MISSIONARY TRAIL

Owing to the strenuous nature of missionary tours, involving but not limited to: door-to-door, street, and market-place evangelism, as well as in-house ministry, which may involve long periods of walking, mountain climbing, driving, sailing and or flying, it is therefore required that all missionaries be at an acceptable level of fitness. If you are unaccustomed to any form of physically taxing exercise, this tour of duty is for…

Please carry an adequate supply of drinking water and dress appropriately for various forms of community outdoor/indoor evangelism to ensure the minimum of discomfort. Let’s make this yet another safe and spiritually rewarding missionary tour of duty for all involved.

DOs & DON’Ts
DO:

ü Carry an adequate supply of water, a minimum of one litre per person (if required).

ü  Take along snacks that will boost your energy levels, like fruits, granola bars, other health/sports bars etc.

ü  Wear a good sunscreen to avoid sunburn and mosquito repellent (if required).

ü  Wear loose fitting cotton clothing that covers your body (no bare midriffs or strapless garments): a loose cotton T-shirt and long pants (possibly jeans) are encouraged as we may be in grass and bushes.

ü  Wear a hat to minimize sun fatigue.

ü  Wear laced up sports shoes or hiking boots with double socks (if necessary), a smooth soft pair under a rough pair, this helps to avoid blisters from chafing (rubbing), as the socks will rub against each other rather than your feet.

ü  Carry any asthma or allergy related medications on your person along with a face mask if needed (to minimise exposure to pollutants in the atmosphere) and let the missionary leader know at the beginning if you have any health challenges.

ü  Always stay close to your missionary partner(s) or missionary leader (especially during outdoor community evangelism).

ü  Remember that flashlights may be required for outdoor evangelism.

DON’T:

ü  Over burden yourself with unnecessary baggage, like huge shoulder or hand bags and heavy haversacks. Take only the bare necessities.

ü  Eat food that will lead to tiredness or dehydration, like too many salty snacks, etc.

ü  Wear sandals or shoes you know are too tight or uncomfortable. Acquire appropriate footwear before leaving for the missionary tour of duty, especially if you know the type of terrain you will be travelling through (e.g., swamp, forest, mountain, sandy, or rocky ground, etc.)

ü  Allow stipulations/regulations/rules/laws governing a specific style of dress or diet, especially in a foreign culture or country, to hinder the spread of the gospel of Christ. Consider Paul’s counsel to the churches in Rome and Corinth (Rom.14; 1Cor.8; 1Cor.9:19-23; 1Cor.11:1-16).

It is expected that missionaries will obey the missionary leaders and be cooperative at all times. It only takes one person to ruin a good time and one divinely inspired change-maker to facilitate a glorious outcome for all.
